This picture is Lily, one of Ely's most famous residents since giving birth online viewed by millions all over the world. Many new exhibits have been added to the North American Bear Center this year where you can learn more about Lily, her cub and other Black Bear information.   It is certainly worth a stop when you come to the Blueberry festival this year.  You will be pleasantly surprised by the fun your family can have at the Bear Center.  And, you might just learn, as Dr. Lynn Rogers teaches, the Black Bear is not near the terror portrayed by TV and many outdoor magazines.  It is actually a very timid creature. Since we have had a warmer than usual spring, Ely gardners planted about 3 weeks earlier than usual.  This has been a great seasons for gardens, flowers, and blueberries.  Looks like there should be a bumper crop this year.  So, if you usually "hunt" the elusive wild blueberry while you are here for the festival, you may want to come early this year and stay a little longer. Another result of our warm early spring is that the walleyes were not to be found in their usual spots at the times everyone expected.  Even fishing Basswood has had its challenges this year and frustrated even the "pros." But, as the saying goes, When the going gets tough, the fishermen just keep fishing.  At least that has been my experience.
