This rattle gourd is made from a medium sized flat gourd covered in hand-made paper. The front of the gourd piece features a small muskrat fur face. Beads,feathers,leather and buttons enhance the piece . The gourd rattle is mounted on a deer antler which also serves as the rattle handle. Dry seeds inside the rattle make a soft rattling sound when gently shaken. Susan Malander Replogle lives on the rocky shores of Little Long Lake near Ely ,Minnesota in the heart of the Superior National Forest and adjacent to the beautiful Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Being literally surrounded by lakes and forest, I draw deeply from my environment for inspiration in my art work. In addition to my gourd works I also make hand-made paper notecards in leather pouches and large wall hangings from natural materials found in the woods and along the shores. I hold a BFAE degree in art education from Wayne State College in Wayne , Nebraska. Susan's work can be seen at Bare Bones Studio on E. Sheridan St. in Ely.
